This week ended Brunel Museum’s fifteenth Summer Playscheme . The children had a good time with craft workshops and in play and ended with a rousing Thames Tunnel Fancy Fair performance for parents, the Mayor and our funders North Southwark Environment Trust, Team London Bridge and Rotherhithe Community Council. Check out our blog, facebook page or twitter feed for updates and photos from the past two weeks.
Children have helped transform a grot spot into a pretty riverside garden for everybody to enjoy. Brunel was a gardener as well as an engineer, as his biography describes:
‘He laid out his property in plantations of choice trees. The occupation of arranging them gave him unfailing pleasure. There can be little doubt that the happiest hours of his life were spent in walking about the gardens with his wife and children, and discussing the condition and prospects of his favourite trees’
The river square now has fine looking herb planters and seats and they are on wheels to be arranged for group seating at social events or cleared away to make an empty space for the Playscheme. And the roof garden the children helped build draws thousands of visitors each year, some for cocktails at the Midnight Apothecary.
