Happy 186th Birthday Robert Howlett, photographer extraordinaire, born this day! This is the man who snapped IK Brunel on the Isle of Dogs in 1857 and so created the image that fuelled the myth that made the Man of Iron.
A week of religious fervour at The Brunel Museum. The Fourth Choir concert sold out again, and Elizabethan harmonies and plainsong echoed around the scooped vaults – or concrete jack arches – of the Grand Entrance Hall, which I now see is probably very late Tudor. The Modulus Quartet, regular summer visitors, finished their tour with a special event under the same vaulted ceiling with the launch of their debut album called ’Twelve Seconds of Light’ : a beautiful collection of modern chamber music, with film and animation descanting on love, dislocation and even terrorism. For the mystics in the audience, ‘The Cloud of Unknowing’ revisited.
Children from Albion Primary School came to learn about the Docks and Canary Wharf School met Brunel in Person and more archaeologists came via the Crossrail exhibition at Museum in Docklands. Heritage boat trips and river walks were busy, and so was the Midnight Apothecary.
Next week we have three archaeology groups and school visits, details are below. We welcome Secret Adventures with a film evening, and the usual heritage boat trips which I am sure you will enjoy which ever day you opt for – no need to book, just turn up 10.40 Embankment tube station (not Monday).
