This holiday week there are children’s activities and craft workshops each day. On Thursday Secret Adventures offer Cinema and cocktails in the underground chamber and there are heritage boat tours and river walks every day. The calendar for the week is below.
Meanwhile all is well on board Norwegian Cruise Line Epic. We have calm seas and following winds, unlike Sea Venture 190 years ago. We land at Royal Naval Dockyards, west of the island, which is better than running aground with 9 feet of water in the hold on the reefs of Discovery Bay to the east. My first talk was about the Sea Venture, my second talk is about the easy way to cross the Atlantic: by steam!
Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s first ship the Great Western was the biggest steamship in the world and the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. Sailing ships took ten weeks, but the Great Western took ten days. The Great Eastern was the biggest ship in the world for half a century: the first ship with a double hull, with bulkheads from keel to top deck. This is the ancestor of the super tanker and the container ship, she ship that changed forever the patterns of trade and consumption. She also laid the first three trans Atlantic cables, heralding today’s world of telecommunications and information technology. ‘We have laid a cable from shore to shore, through which lightning flashes messages of friendship between our kindred nations’. Sir Daniel Gooch July 26 1886
Later this week I shall talk about the 34 miles of tunnels in Gibraltar, and the English railway from Gibraltar to Malaga
