Director’s diary 09/10/16

Did you ever wonder what it is like to run a small museum? I am starting a weekly blog: a mixture of notices and news, hopes, anxieties and declarations. I should say that I don’t lead all the walks, and I certainly don’t do any of the painting and not much gardening. Review what I have written, I see it is quite laconic, but a first try, and I will warm to my subject…

This week our new Brunel books roll off the Graphicom press in Italy! I write this with some delight and relief, because the process of write and rewrite, revise and proof and check, has been going on for quite some time. My co-author Eric Kentley has been very patient, which is good, for it can be exhausting and stressful!. We are updating and reprinting the very successful The Brunels’ Tunnel, introduction by the amiable Michael Palin, and are producing a new volume Brunel’s Great Eastern , introduction by the wonderful Joanna Lumley. I am nervous and excited to see these books safely despatched from Italy and on the shelves in London! This is also, by happy coincidence, the week the Italians celebrate here in the Grand Entrance Hall of The Brunel Museum, fundraising for FAI Italian Heritage Trust. Really beautiful prints by Antonietta Torsiello, mostly about Brunel projects, now in Brunel Museum Cafe Gallery. Private View this evening.

Gardening Club, a wonderful group, meet to look after the museum gardens. Meeting with contractors about name plates for the new staircase

Cadmore End Primary school meet Brunel in Person. I don’t have the time to do all the school visits, but today I get a chance to put on IKB’s big top hat.

Saturday 15th Oct

13.30 lunch with the Director (me) at the Tunnel Club, Mayflower pub upper room. How I enjoy this event…
19.00 Italian Pizzica Concert with Amaraterra, a really excellent band. Traditional dances and music from Calabria, the heel of Italy – and food and drink too. This is a Benefit Concert for Italian Heritage Trust, and I shall have a dance and perhaps the odd leap!
